Purpose

Teenage girls in our community are in crisis. Not only are they going through physical and emotional changes, but today’s culture allows others to comment, post, tweet, chat, and visually record them during this most vulnerable time. Our young girls are struggling silently with a lack of confidence and low self-esteem. SisterFriend realizes the best and most practical way to prevent the next generation of women from falling into situations of homelessness or poverty is to build resiliency and promote positive self-images. The SisterFriend Leadership Academy Conference serves as a training ground for young women looking to make a difference in their community.

The program is open to (30) 13- to 16-year-old young women in under-served areas of Allegheny County at no cost to participate.  Workshops focus on Feminine Health, Community Service and Leadership.

Sponsorship and Volunteer opportunities are available.

Funding for the 2017 program was provided in part by a grant from the POISE Foundation
and sponsorship from Urban Academy of Greater Pittsburgh
